A 60-year-old warehouse operative, who has remained unnamed, was forced into redundancy following a preventable accident at work.  The worker had just started his shift and was walking through the warehouse, when a fork-lift truck backed out of an alley and knocked him over.  The fork-lift drove over his right leg, breaking it and causing substantial damage to his knee.  He was rushed to hospital where he had to undergo surgery.  He soon started to experience pain in his left leg, meaning he could only walk with crutches – a situation that continues into the present time.

Council compensate gardener following thorn prick

Broxtowe Borough Council has compensated a former employee after he contracted a serious streptococcal infection as a result of being pricked by a thorn from a berberis bush.  The 59-year-old gardener from Derbyshire, who has not been named, was confined to intensive care for two weeks following developing the debilitating symptoms of the disease.  The symptoms, which can be life-threatening, start as flu-like aches and pains.  In the victim’s case, his arm started swelling up to the point that his skin split all the way up to his elbow from his wrist.  He was rushed to hospital where it was diagnosed that he had contracted the infection as a direct result of being pricked by a thorn.  The patient had been working as a gardener for 30 years previous to the incident.  Although his infection was treated and he has made a recovery, he now suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder making him unable to work.  He is currently unemployed.
