Girl awarded £6.65 million following tragic car crash

A young girl who was left disabled following a car crash in 2002 has been awarded £6.65 million in compensation.  The child, one of four siblings, was travelling in a car driven by her mother when the accident took place.  Tragically, her eldest sibling was killed and another sustained a brain injury.  The other child was left with serious orthopaedic problems, and the claimant was left paraplegic due to severe and complete spinal cord injuries.

Man paralyses friend drunk driving

A drunk driver, whose car went out of control in bad weather conditions and plunged down a gorge paralysing his friend, has been found guilty of dangerous driving.  Robert Buzalski, Krysztof Birula and one other man were driving towards Edzell on 24 August 2013 when the crash took place on a farm road from Cornes Cottage to Dalbog Farm, near Edzell.  Buzalski had been drinking vodka liqueur and was found to be driving with 124 miligrammes  of alcohol against a legal limit of 80.

Suspended prison sentence following car crash

A man has been sentenced to a suspended prison sentence after his dangerous driving caused a car accident that left a teacher critically injured. 78-year-old John King pleaded not guilty to the sentence that his dangerous driving caused an accident, claiming that a medical condition resulted in his loss of consciousness during the approach to the roundabout where the accident happened. Despite pleading not guilty, the jury convicted him at Ipswich Crown Court in August and he was sentenced to a two year suspended prison sentence.

Over 300 drivers handed on-the-spot fines

Since police were presented with new powers to hand out on-the-spot fines for careless driving two years ago, over 300 drivers have been fined in the Avon and Somerset region. The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) gathered the figures through a Freedom of Information request, set to correspond with Injury Prevention Day, The non-profit organisation is currently campaigning to ban tailgating.

4 years for dangerous driver

Robert Blackwell, 19, from Hayway Lane, Bampton, Oxfordshire, has been given a 4-year jail sentence after admitting dangerous driving resulting in the death of schoolgirl, Liberty Baker, 14, on 30 June.  Blackwell’s car mounted the pavement killing Liberty and injuring 2 of her friends as they walked to school in Witney, Oxfordshire.  Blackwell admitted causing death by dangerous driving and inflicting serious injury by dangerous driving, and admitted to having smoked cannabis on the day before taking to the road.  The incident took place in Curbridge Road and also involved Paul Cracknell who was walking on the pavement behind the girls.  Mr Cracknell is still receiving treatment for the serious leg injuries which he sustained.

Pothole damage payouts on the rise

New figures have revealed that in the last year alone, pothole compensation payouts have increased by 20%.  The figures show that Lincolnshire County Council has made 1,500 payouts to motorists since January 2012, with the sum increasing from £133,015 paid out in 2012 to £157,266 in 2013.  Lincolnshire County Council was labeled ‘pothole capital of Britain’ as a result of these findings.

Ambulance crash leaves two injured

A serious crash on the A40 saw two pedestrians critically injured.  An ambulance car, which had been responding to an emergency in Cheltenham, hit two men aged 30 and 32.  The men had been on the road near GCHQ at 00:20 on Sunday when they were hit by a rapid-response car.  The paramedic that was driving the ambulance car was “shaken but uninjured”, according to police.

Man in Ireland awarded £6m in compensation

A man in Northern Ireland is due to receive around £6million in compensation after he suffered life-changing injuries in a car accident.  The 25-year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - sustained brain injuries and numerous broken bones in the accident.  He had only been a passenger in the car when it swerved into a field in 2007.

Error costs health trust £1.2million

A healthcare trust has been billed over £1million after a former patient sued over the loss of his leg.  Following a relentless legal battle, Edward Appleby has won a six-figure settlement over the treatment he received at North Devon District Hospital in 2005, which he blames for the loss of his leg.  Even though Northern Devon Healthcare Trust has not admitted liability for negligence, they apologised for having incomplete documentation on his care following a road accident. It was heard that the hospital failed to find the majority of his medical notes.

Motorist survives 80ft cliff fall

A motorist has survived an 80ft cliff fall after his car slid from the road and into the sea near Brighton. The man managed to free himself from the submerged vehicle and swam back to the rocks with only minor injuries.  The 33-year-old said that he was lucky to have missed the Undercliff promenade during the fall, and instead landed on rocks in the sea.
